Virtual Abortion Training Institutes

MSFC’s Virtual Abortion Training Institutes (Virtual ATIs) provide medical students with a unique educational opportunity to learn about abortion and family planning in a small group virtual environment using independent learning, didactive and interactive sessions, and self-paced hands-on training simulations. The virtual ATI program primarily covers medical and surgical abortion in the first trimester, and includes values clarification, advocacy training and a provider panel. Medical students will have the opportunity to engage with current abortion providers who have familiarity and experience with the unique challenges of providing abortion care throughout the US. Accepted students will receive an MSFC training kit with supplies to practice dilation and MVA (manual vacuum aspiration) techniques.

Admission is application-based and highly competitive as space is limited. Only medical students attending schools located in the US are eligible to attend. Priority will be given to first and second year medical students with very little or no access to abortion training on campus or offsite. Medical students who have previously attended MSFC’s Abortion Training Institute (ATI), Reproductive Health Externship (RHE) or Conference on Family Planning are discouraged from applying at this time due to your advanced level of knowledge regarding abortion care.

2023 Virtual ATIs Dates:
  • Saturday, June 24, 2023 – 10am to 5:00pm ET*
  • Saturday, July 29, 2023 – 10am to 5:00pm ET*

*Attendance is mandatory for all sessions during the Virtual ATI and only those medical students who are available to attend should apply. Sessions will not be recorded.

Applications to the 2023 Virtual ATIs are now closed. The next ATI sessions will be held in 2024.
