Medical students’ abortion training is stifled in a post-Dobbs nation: Hannah Ahrendt and Eija Kent

Medical school is like drinking from a fire hydrant – too much to learn in a limited amount of time. But what happens when that fire hydrant gets shut off, so only a small trickle of knowledge flows out? That was what happened this summer when the Dobbs v. Jackson decision restricted access to abortion training nationally.
Medical education is expansive, covering every common condition and procedure to prepare physicians to provide high-quality care. Despite an average of over 600,000 abortions performed in 2020 in the United States, abortion training is not mandatory in medical school curriculum.
