UMich community reacts to expanded reproductive rights in Michigan

MSFC is a plaintiff on the Northland Family Planning Center v. Nessel case.
On May 13, the Michigan Court of Claims ruled in the case of Northland Family Planning Center v. Nessel that several of Michigan’s restrictions on abortion access are unconstitutional under the state’s Reproductive Freedom for All amendment. Restrictions the court struck down include the use of uniform informed consent documents, which plaintiffs claimed often contained inaccurate or unnecessary information, as well as state laws requiring a mandatory 24-hour waiting period between signing these documents and access to abortion. The court also struck down a ban on advanced practice clinicians providing abortion care. However, the Court of Claims did not strike down the state’s required mandatory coercion screening…
