Wisconsin law does not ban abortion, but advocates warn reproductive care is still at risk

In July, the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled invalid an 1849 criminal statute that had been interpreted as an abortion ban. The law had outlawed the procedure for a year after the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization reversed Roe v. Wade and the constitutional affirmation of the right to abortion in June 2022.
The ruling on the Wisconsin law was a significant win after a three-year legal battle by reproductive rights activists, but restrictions on reproductive care remain. Providers and lawmakers tell the Wisconsin Independent dass, despite the ruling, abortion is still heavily restricted in the state and federal cuts to Medicaid will hit low-income and rural Wisconsin residents hardest…
